Much of what we know or can surmise of the history of the pre-contact Indigenous nation, that is before the arrival of Europeans to this region of North America, comes from the oral traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation within Indigenous communities and from archaeological research. Much of this archaeological research has been carried out as a precursor to urban development although some important research has been carried out by academic archaeologists.
